Sports Writer | Multimedia Specialist
Hello! My name is Matt Weyrich and I'm an award-winning journalist writing about the Washington Nationals and other professional sports in Washington, D.C., for NBC Sports Washington.
I grew up in Northern Virginia attending Nationals games at RFK Stadium and rocking Gilbert Arenas jerseys to school (the gold alternates, of course). Now, I have the opportunity to cover the very teams I've followed my whole life. I'm most passionate about baseball, having covered the Nationals in various capacities since 2015. I particularly enjoy diving into the statistics of the game and have a well-rounded understanding of everything from payroll structure to in-game strategy.
My journalism career began at James Madison University, from which I graduated with a bachelor's degree in Media Arts and Design, concentration in journalism and minor in sport communication in May 2019. Along the way, I covered JMU football's run to the FCS national championship for my student newspaper, The Breeze, before guiding the paper as editor-in-chief for two years. Under my leadership, The Breeze won back-to-back Virginia Press Association grand sweepstakes awards for only the second time in its history.
With bylines in The Washington Post Express, SB Nation, Sports Illustrated Kids, C-VILLE Weekly and Northern Virginia Magazine, I have a diverse portfolio that includes both sports and news coverage.
