Sports Writer | Multimedia Specialist
Hello! My name is Matt Weyrich and I'm an award-winning reporter who writes about the Washington Nationals as well as other professional and collegiate sports in the greater D.C. area for NBC Sports Washington.
Few people follow the Nationals as closely as I do, having grown up in Northern Virginia and written about them in various capacities since 2015. I'm a versatile reporter capable of doing features, columns, analysis, stories tailored to social media engagement and general news pieces. An avid baseball junkie, I enjoy diving into the statistics of the game and have a well-rounded understanding of everything from payroll structure to in-game strategy.
I spent four years at James Madison University and graduated with a bachelor's degree in Media Arts and Design in May 2019. Along the way, I covered JMU football's run to the FCS national championship for my student newspaper, The Breeze, before guiding the paper as editor-in-chief for two years. Under my leadership, The Breeze was awarded back-to-back Virginia Press Association grand sweepstakes awards for only the second time in its then-96-year history.
With bylines in The Washington Post Express, SB Nation, Sports Illustrated Kids, C-VILLE Weekly and Northern Virginia Magazine, I have a diverse portfolio that includes both sports and news coverage.
